Mawsmai Cave and the Monsoon Connection

Meghalaya is one of the wettest regions on Earth, and the monsoon plays a vital role in shaping Mawsmai Cave. During the rainy season, water flows through the cave system, replenishing underground streams and continuing the slow process of erosion. The monsoon also enhances the cave’s beauty, as moisture makes the rock surfaces glisten under artificial light. However, heavy rainfall can make some sections slippery, requiring extra caution. The close relationship between rainfall and cave formation makes Mawsmai a living geological system, still evolving with every passing season.
